2008 Air Shows

Joint Service Open House, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

Location: Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland
Admission: Free
Parking: Free with shuttle bus service to the spectator area.
Value: Excellent

This show is held annually in mid May. While drawing huge crowds (300,000 people) they handle the logistics extremely well. Nonetheless, be prepared to stand in line for security check and the bus transportation from the parking area to the spectator area and return.

Featured performers alternate between the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy Blue Angels.

The static display is huge and too numerous to list here but suffice it to say that you will see a broad array of operational aircraft, current and past.

It can be very warm this this time of year so be prepared with plenty of sunblock and bring your chairs as you will be sitting on the concrete apron.
Food and beverage are plentiful but expensive.

Some of the WWII, Korean and current warbirds participating were:

  • B-17F Memphis Belle
  • P-51 Mustang
  • F-86 Sabre
  • MiG 17
  • B-2 Flying Wing
  • F-111 Stealth Figther
  • F-4 Phantom
  • F-15 Eagle
  • F-16 Viper
  • F-18 Super Hornet
  • F-22 Raptor
  • A-10 Thunderbolt II
  • The Blue Angels
  • The Thunderbirds
  • C-17 Globemaster III
  • C-5 Galaxy
  • and many others.
Rating: 9 out of 10
The show highlight was the Stealth F-111 and B-2 Flying Wing
