The Italian Air Force Aerobatic Team “Freece Tricolori” celebrated their 50th Anniversary at Rivolto AFB on September 11-12. The air show is held every five years at Rivolto airbase, west of Udine. It is a great event to see the best European aerobatic teams perform in one place. The photo conditions are ideal, with the sun behind and it doesn't interfere with the aircraft taxiing in front of you. A 300mm lens or a zoom in this range is sufficient to take good photos of aircraft taking off or landing.

The weather was perfect on both show days, sunny and very warm. On arrival day Friday, Sept.10th there were heavy rain showers.

On Saturday there were 150,000 spectators, and on Sunday it was double: 300,000! The gates opened at 7:30 a.m., and closed at 18:00. Early arrival is recommended to secure a good viewing spot on the field. The line up in front of the gate started at 6:00 a.m. Needless to say, there were heavy traffic jams and delays on both days.

The actual flying began at 10:30 and lasted to 16:45 on Saturday and from 11:00 to 18:00 on Sunday. The only variation from the program was the Red Arrows who only performed on Sunday. There were also some guest pilots without their aircraft attending from several teams:

  • Black Eagles (Korea)
  • Silver Falcons ( South Africa)
  • Al Fursan (UAE)

Some of the flying displays were:

  • Aeronautica Militare AB 212
  • Aeronautica Militare MB 339 Solo display
  • Team Iskry ( Poland) with 7 T-11 Iskras
  • Aeronautica Militare Tornado Solo display
  • Wings of Storm ( Croatia) with 6 PC-M9
